Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana ‘A Jewel in the Crown of Panjab University’, are the words of former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University Sh. Suraj Bhan Ji. Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana is a premier institution of the state. Highly acclaimed for its great and glorious traditions and excellence in the field of education, the college has played a pioneering role in producing ‘Women of Substance’. The College, which was established in the city under the leadership of its founder principal Miss Suda Sen during the British Raj in 1943 with 25 students and just six teachers in a small bungalow (which is now Gujranwala Khalsa College), now spread over 45 acres of land, 10 acres of build up area, has made outstanding progress in all spheres-in scholastic as well as extracurricular activities. The present building came into existence in 1953.

The institution has the distinction of being one of the largest, best equipped and most popular college of northern India. College is empowering about 3000 girls, mostly from rural areas, each year by imparting value based quality education to them. Located in sylvan surroundings, the college boasts of a beautiful and well-maintained campus. The college has 30 classrooms, 22 labs and 4 Computer labs. The college has a well maintained computerized library with more than 65,000 books, 63 magazines, 15 newspapers and reading rooms having seating capacity of 200. The college has well furnished Girl’s hostel to accommodate 250 students. The college building is majestic; the sprawling and lush green lawns, with great variety of colorful flowers, are feast for eyes. The lovely Chrysanthemums and other prize winning entries in various flower shows always become the cynosure of all eyes. The highly academic environment makes everyone, the teachers and the taught, take great pride in the fact that they are associated with this great institution. The college has a faculty of about 86 distinguished teachers out of which there are 17 Ph.D and 30 M.Phil. and an almost equal number of non-teaching staff. The college imparts quality education in Science, Commerce and Arts streams at the graduate level. There is excellent arrangement for the teaching of 26 subjects and 10 honors courses. There are 7 post graduate courses in Fine Arts, Music Instrumental, Punjabi, Post Graduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics, M.Com, M.Sc (IT) and P.G.D.C.A.

The college results have always been on much higher level than those of the University.
